How God Pulls Us Back to Himself- Even When We Drift

No matter how far we wander, His love is always reaching.

Dear friend,

Have you ever wondered why life, even at its best, still leaves you longing for something more? You could be surrounded by comfort, possessions, or even people—and yet, deep down, there’s a hunger that nothing else can satisfy.

That hunger is holy. It’s not a flaw in you—it’s a pull from God. Because your soul came from Him. And it’s on its way back.

The Restlessness That Leads Us Home

We’re all searching for joy. Even those living far from God are chasing happiness—it’s just that the world’s version never lasts. “Even in evil, man is seeking happiness… But those who keep searching, letting go of the shallow pleasures of the world, will eventually find true happiness in God.” It’s why the Prodigal Son left everything behind—only to discover that nothing could replace the Father’s love. And when he returned, the Father ran to meet him. That’s God’s heart for us

You Were Never Meant to Stay Lost Scripture says, “All we like sheep have gone astray.” (Isaiah 53:6) But the story doesn’t end there. Even as we drift, even as we choose other loves, God is already moving toward us. “You are directly dependent on one power—God. Without His beam of life, we are dead.” The air in your lungs? It’s from Him. The beat in your chest? A rhythm He sustains. The desire for meaning and belonging? A holy echo calling you home.

God Doesn’t Want You Afraid—He Wants You Close Some were taught to fear God as a distant, angry judge. But Jesus came to reveal the truth: “I want to teach you that God is your own—dearer than the dearest, nearer than the nearest, more loving than all things that we love.” Like a good Father, God waits for the moment we turn to Him. And when we do, He runs toward us. He doesn't demand perfection—He wants your presence. He wants your persistence. “If you constantly call to Him, He cannot escape the net of your devotion.”

The Pull of God vs. the Pull of the World

Everything in life is being pulled by something. The world pulls us toward distraction, addiction, and temporary comfort. God pulls us toward freedom, peace, and our original purpose. “Whatever exerts a gravitational pull toward God is good. Whatever pulls us away is evil.” It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being aware. What are you gravitating toward—especially when you’re tired, lonely, or afraid? Does it bring you closer to God, or farther away?

Your Soul Is Already on the Return Journey

I am not the body. I am joy. I am light. I am wisdom. I am love.” You were made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). You are spirit first, beloved, and eternal. This life—this world—isn’t the end. It's just the beginning. Even Jesus reminded us: “Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink… Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?” (Matthew 6:25) In every moment—especially in suffering or stress—we can shift our perspective by remembering: I am God’s. He dwells within me. And He is enough.

You Don’t Have to Wait Years to Return The world says it takes time to change. But the Spirit says, “Today is the day of salvation.” (2 Corinthians 6:2) “Why wait millions of years to return to God? The moment you truly want Him, nothing can stop you.” It doesn’t matter how far you’ve wandered or how many times you’ve failed. God isn’t asking for your perfection—He’s asking for your yes.

Start with Awareness—End in Worship

How do we return to God practically? Start simple: Recognize what’s pulling you away. Turn your mind and heart back to Him. Seek Him in prayer, in worship, in stillness. “Worship in a church is good. But go into your own temple of silence and meet God there too.”

The Kingdom Is Already Within You Jesus said, “The kingdom of God is within you.” (Luke 17:21) The peace, the joy, the clarity you’ve been searching for—it’s not somewhere out there. It’s right where you are. Waiting. Ready. Calling you by name.

Final Word of Encouragement You are not too far gone. You haven’t missed your chance. You haven’t messed up beyond repair. God is already pulling you— All you have to do is stop resisting. Say yes. Say, “I’m coming home.” “When you truly want to be released from this world’s distractions, nothing can stop you from returning to God.” You are loved. You are wanted. And your return has already begun. With hope, Harbor & Vine Press
